Seiler LLP Names Marla Sari Chief Administrative Officer

Redwood City, Calif.-based Seiler LLP (FY18 net revenue of $56.8 million) has appointed Marla Sari to the role of chief administrative officer.

“Marla has shown remarkable initiative since joining Seiler more than a decade ago, playing an essential role in growing the firm to nearly double its revenue,” says CEO George D. Marinos. “Her leadership has been indispensable to the firm’s ability to open new offices, boost transparency and efficiency, and streamline reporting and tax management processes.”

Sari will lead Seiler’s operations, IT, administrative and facilities teams, managing some 25 people from the firm’s Redwood City headquarters. Sari, who most recently served as Seiler’s managing director of administration, has more than 30 years of experience in IT and operational management with a focus in professional services. Prior to joining Seiler in 2007 she worked as an IT systems administrator, programmer and project manager.

At the firm, Sari has leveraged her programming expertise to overhaul processes, software and reporting standards, while also overseeing many of the firm’s expansion efforts and solidifying risk management and tax planning procedures.

Seiler Elevates Nancy Young to the Partnership

“Nancy is an outstanding addition to the partnership. She has a long track record of successfully advising clients on a range of national and cross-border tax and business matters, and has done phenomenal work leading our U.S.-China practice,” says COO George D. Marinos.

Young, who joined Seiler after graduating from the University of California at Berkeley, advises multi-state and multi-national corporations and partnerships, as well as high-net-worth multi-generational family groups. She has deep expertise in tax planning and compliance, estate and charitable giving matters, stock options, foreign transactions, IRS and Franchise Tax Board representations and business planning, as well as considerable experience providing assurance services and overseeing audit engagements for tax clients.

Fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, Young is Seiler’s HLB Global China service representative, and leads U.S.-China engagements and services for international clients. She is also the co-chair of the firm’s tax committee and co-leader of the business tax business development group.

Redwood City, Calif.-based Seiler LLP (FY17 net revenue of $54.4 million) announces that Kevin Paul has joined the firm as chief operating officer (COO).

Paul, with more than 30 years of financial and operational leadership experience, is based in the firm’s Redwood City office.

Prior to joining Seiler, Paul spent 10 years as the executive director and CFO of Blakely Sokoloff Taylor & Zafman, an intellectual property law firm. He also served as chair of the firm’s executive management committee. In previous in-house roles, he oversaw the finances of investment management, data publishing and carpet manufacturing companies. At the outset of his career, he spent 10 years in auditing and forensics with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Agarwal is an international tax and corporate M&A partner at Seiler LLP and leads the firm’s international and corporate tax practice. He focuses on international and corporate tax planning for multinational corporations and other business entities, and regularly consults with his clients on M&A tax and transfer pricing matters. Agarwal assists his clients by providing tax consulting services for stock and asset acquisitions/dispositions, structuring of tax efficient business models, intellectual property planning, tax efficient repatriation and treasury management structures.

Redwood City, Calif.-based Seiler LLP (FY17 net revenue of $54.4 million) announced that Sumit Pal, a senior IT audit executive with more than 25 years of experience in internal audit, IT/cybersecurity matters and software engineering, has joined the firm as an audit principal.

Pal is the firm’s senior-most practitioner in IT and internal audit, having conducted a wide range of critical engagements for public and privately held companies, as well as non-profits, across multiple industries including financial services, technology, life sciences and media. He will be based in the firm’s Redwood City office.

“Sumit’s arrival helps the firm further support clients’ assurance needs around IT, internal controls and cybersecurity infrastructure. His joining Seiler further strengthens this area on their behalf,” says Debra McCall, Seiler’s PIC of the audit practice. “We look forward to his many contributions.”

Seiler Expands Silicon Valley Presence with New Office in San Jose

Redwood City, Calif.-based Seiler LLP (FY16 net revenue of $51.1 million) announced it has expanded its presence in Silicon Valley with the opening of an office in San Jose.

The expansion comes at a time when the firm is experiencing steady growth and seeks to attract additional talent, as well as reduce commute times for existing staff. The office is located near the heart of San Jose and accommodates approximately 40 partners and staff. It also provides another location for clients to visit the firm.

With the firm’s new South Bay presence, Seiler now has three physical offices in the Bay Area: San Francisco, its headquarters in Redwood City and San Jose.

He is a tax partner in the real estate industry practice at Seiler, and has extensive experience in leasing and real estate developer issues, transaction structures, financing arrangements and consulting on 1031 transactions.

Hastings has 15 years of experience in audit, accounting and advisory and is a leader in the firm’s audit practice. Her industry experience includes financial services (broker-dealers, registered advisors and investment funds), professional services, manufacturing, distribution and wholesale and others. With over 20 years of experience, LaVelle has played a critical role in the rapid growth and expansion of the firm’s family office services, the fastest growing department in the organization. LaVelle has helped develop numerous services for ultra high-net-worth individuals and families with the goal to simplify and clarify the complexity of their financial lives. In addition, he has many years of experience in estate and financial planning for high-net-worth individuals and multi-generational families, finance and internal control systems, including design and implementation.

Born, COO, has been with the firm since 2007. Since joining Seiler, she has successfully led the effort to implement transformative initiatives in the firm’s business operations while focusing on revenue and profitability. She brings over 20 years of experience overseeing firm management and day-to-day operations, specializing in strategic planning, organizational development, change management and risk management. In 2014, Lynne was named one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Silicon Valley, and she chairs the board of Watermark, a Silicon Valley executive women’s networking organization.

Seiler Founding Partner Passes

Donald Seiler, who in 1957 started Redwood City, Calif.-based Seiler and Co. (FY11 net revenue of $32.9 million), died of cancer Aug. 3 at his home in Atherton. He was 83.

Seiler, who was a Jewish community activist, liked to say, “We serve people, not numbers,” the newspaper reported. He also established the Donald H. and Ruth F. Seiler Chair in Public Accounting at the Haas School of Business at the University of California’s Berkeley campus.

Seiler & Co., which began in San Carlos, Calif., now has offices in Redwood City and San Francisco. His firm became one of the most successful in the Silicon Valley area. “He always felt it was important to give back to the community, help those in need and to inspire others,” said his daughter, Carol Seiler Roberts of Menlo Park. “He was a numbers man and a people person.”
