Tim Lyons Named PIC of Mauldin and Jenkins’ Columbia Office

Atlanta-based Mauldin & Jenkins (FY19 net revenue of $52.5 million) announces that Tim Lyons has been appointed PIC of the Columbia, S.C., office.

He will be responsible for the management and strategic expansion of the office, which serves clients throughout the Carolinas. Lyons succeeds Chuck Statler, who has served in the role since 2017 when Mauldin & Jenkins merged with Derrick Stubbs and Stith.

“Tim is a forward-thinking and capable leader whose guidance will help support the firm’s overall strategy and grow our presence in the South Carolina region,” says MP Hanson Borders.

Lyons specializes in serving clients in a wide range of industries including state and local governments, higher education and not-for-profit organizations. His experience covers audits and attestation services, consulting and advisory work.

He joined the Atlanta office in August 2009 and relocated to the Columbia office in 2018.

Mauldin & Jenkins Announces New IT Subsidiary

Atlanta-based Mauldin & Jenkins (FY19 net revenue of $52.5 million) announces a new subsidiary – Advisory Information Technology LLC (AdIT) of Marietta, Ga.

As a division of Mauldin & Jenkins, AdIT will function as an independently operated subsidiary. The deal is expected to augment Mauldin & Jenkins’ current IT capabilities and expand its offering of technology-related services and support to a wide variety of clients.

AdIT, founded in 2012 by Jerry Jones and Matisse Long, helps clients improve processes and increase efficiency while minimizing risk, fulfilling regulatory and compliance responsibilities, and solving complex business problems.

MP Hanson Borders says, “We believe that in addition to traditional business advisory and accounting services, it is critical that top-tier firms find new ways to meet client needs in an era of rapid technological change and an ever-evolving risk environment.” He adds, “Our existing IT offerings have proven extremely popular. Mauldin & Jenkins Partner Named GASB Chair

Joel Black, PIC of the audit practice at Atlanta-based Mauldin & Jenkins (FY19 net revenue of $52.5 million), has been named the chair of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).

He will succeed David Vaudt on July 1, when Black’s seven-year, nonrenewable appointment takes effect. He will join GASB in a few months to facilitate a smooth transition.

Black has worked at Mauldin & Jenkins since 2004. Prior to that, he was an employee at KPMG for 12 years.

He oversees the audit practice of the firm’s eight offices throughout five states and also leads the firm’s government professional practice group, covering more than 400 public sector clients.

“He brings extensive knowledge and experience to the role and has genuine appreciation for the opportunities and challenges that our stakeholders face as accounting standards change,” says Kathleen Casey, Financial Accounting Foundation chair. The Financial Accounting Foundation oversees GASB and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB).

“I have been immersed my entire adult life in the important, complex world of governmental accounting,” Black says. “I am eager to join my new colleagues in the mission to establish and improve accounting standards and to engage with the remarkably diverse group of stakeholders who care so much about public sector financial reporting.”

Dorris has extensive experience in state income tax, sales and use tax, personal property tax, as well as credits and incentives. He enjoys state tax planning and organization restructuring to reduce the client’s overall state tax burden. Mauldin & Jenkins plans to expand its footprint to create a national SALT practice.

New MP, Five New Partners at Mauldin & Jenkins

Hanson Borders

Atlanta-based Mauldin & Jenkins (FY18 net revenue of $50.6 million) announces that Hanson Borders, previous Birmingham, Ala., office PIC and financial institutions group leader, became new MP of the firm Sept. 1.

Hanson began his career with Mauldin & Jenkins in 1989 and has 29 years of auditing, tax and consulting experience primarily in the financial services area. He replaces Donny Luker, who served as MP for the last nine years.

In addition, Mauldin & Jenkins announces that five professionals have been admitted as new partners:

Heather Batson

 Heather Batson, Chattanooga, Tenn. – Batson has been with the firm since 2003. Her experience includes audits for financial institutions, including public companies, not-for-profit organizations and employee benefit plans.

Nicole Cunningham, Birmingham, Ala. – Cunningham has been with the firm since 2005. Her experience includes audits for financial institutions, internal control audits, non-profit organization audits, HUD audits, and examinations of controls at service center organizations.

Derrick Cowart, Savannah, Ga. – Cowart is a partner in the governmental practice division. His experience covers a wide variety of state and local governments in Georgia and South Carolina. He has been practicing public accounting since 1985. He came to Mauldin & Jenkins in 2018 as part of the firm’s acquisition of a governmental auditing, accounting and consulting practice in Savannah, Ga., for which he practiced for over 27 years.

Michael Gordon, Atlanta – Gordon joined the firm in 2005. Since then, he has focused his career on audits for financial institutions and audits of employee benefit plans. Additionally, his experience includes assisting clients with FDICIA and SOX 404 testing, HUD compliance and regulatory reporting. His experience also includes audits of clients within the governmental sector and the health care industry.

Mauldin & Jenkins Acquires KRT’s Governmental Practice Division

Atlanta-based Mauldin & Jenkins LLC (FY18 net revenue of $50.6 million) announced the merger of the governmental practice division of KRT CPA of Atlanta. KRT CPA (formerly known as Karp Ronning & Tindol) has been operating in Savannah for over 90 years providing traditional audit and tax services to a wide variety of clients.

Mauldin & Jenkins Acquires of Derrick Stubbs & Stith

Atlanta, Ga.-based Mauldin & Jenkins (FY17 net revenue of $46.2 million) will acquire Derrick Stubbs & Stith of Columbia, S.C. on Oct. 1.

Along with six partners, Derrick Stubbs & Stith brings more than 25 professional and administrative staff members to Mauldin & Jenkins. Partners include Charles Statler, Jr. (MP), Alan Grimsley, Todd Dailey, Timothy Monahan, David Splittgerber and Michelle Chapman. By joining forces, M&J will have approximately 280 people and seven offices located in five states.

Mauldin & Jenkins tailors services according to the many niche industries it serves including closely held businesses, financial institutions, governmental entities, long term health care, non-profits and entrepreneurial services.
