BDO USA Names Kelly Johnson as Board Chair; Four Partners Elected to Board of Directors

Chicago-based BDO USA (FY19 net revenue of $1.64 billion) announced the appointment of Kelly Johnson as board chair, along with Mark Ellenbogen, Hoon Lee and Steven Shill as new board directors. Tony Lawrence was re-elected as a board director for his second three-year term. All changes were effective Nov. 1.

“Since being elected as a board director two years ago, Kelly has made a significant impact with her strategic foresight and innovative mindset,” says Wayne Berson, CEO of BDO USA. “As the first woman board chair, her appointment marks an important milestone for our firm.   • Johnson leads the firm’s business services and outsourcing national practice, with more than 25 years of experience in finance and accounting. She oversees a team that evaluates and benchmarks key business functions to develop an integrated accounting, finance and human capital approach to meet client objectives.
  • Ellenbogen is the Atlantic assurance regional MP and president and CEO of the firm’s public sector practice. With more than 25 years of public accounting experience, he is responsible for the Atlantic region’s audit practice, with a focus on the software and technology, government contracting and private equity industries.
  • Lawrence is the Central assurance regional MP. He led the Grand Rapids, Mich., assurance practice as an OMP for seven years. He has more than 20 years of experience in public accounting, working with public and privately held companies, with international and domestic ventures.
  • Lee is the West tax regional MP. He was one of the first dedicated research and development (R&D) professionals in the West region. He became the San Francisco OMP in 2012, while continuing his role as the West region leader for the R&D tax credit practice. With 22 years of public accounting experience, he has successfully helped to identify and document over $200 million of R&D credit claims.
  • Shill is an assurance partner and national co-leader for the BDO Center for Healthcare Excellence & Innovation. With nearly 30 years of experience, he serves both public and privately held and nonprofit companies in the health care provider, payer and insurance sectors.

BDO USA Expands Advisory Practice With AC Lordi Acquisition

Chicago-based BDO USA LLP (FY18 net revenue of $1.46 billion) has announced the acquisition of AC Lordi (FY17 net revenue of $18.7 million) of Malvern, Pa., effective June 1.

The addition brings 100 professionals to BDO and expands its foothold in the Philadelphia area while expanding its advisory offerings. AC Lordi CEO Frank Lordi, along with the firm’s six other principals, will become BDO partners.

Founded in 2001, AC Lordi specializes in accounting, risk and compliance, business advisory and CFO services. The firm’s practice areas include SEC reporting, technical accounting, internal and IT audit, SOX compliance and finance transformation, among others. The firm has performed work throughout the U.S. and in more than 20 countries for a broad range of clients.

BDO USA Acquires BioProcess Technology Consultants

Chicago-based BDO USA LLP (FY18 net revenue of $1.46 billion) has acquired BioProcess Technology Consultants Inc. The acquisition combines BPTC’s broad chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) consulting services with BDO’s existing capabilities in the life sciences and biopharmaceutical industries.

Founded in 1994, BPTC was a biologics CMC consulting firm, providing a full range of technical, regulatory and strategic assistance related to the development and commercialization of biopharmaceutical products. BPTC assisted clients in developing manufacturing processes and strategies that enhanced the overall value of their products, while de-risking product development.

Howard Levine, BPTC founder, president and CEO will become managing director and national leader of the Bioprocess Technology Group (BPTG) within BDO’s life sciences practice and the majority of BPTC’s consultants will join the new BPTG. “Since our inception, we’ve worked with companies to advance and de-risk the biotherapeutic development process, address unmet medical needs and increase patient access to novel medicines,” says Levine.

BDO USA Makes Key Promotions

Andy Zaleski

Chicago-based BDO USA (FY18 net revenue of $1.46 billion) has announced the promotion of three professionals: Andy Zaleski, who has been promoted to Detroit tax OMP; John Marquardt, who will serve as the tax MP for the central region; and Rich Black, who was previously a senior manager in the firm’s Detroit office and is now a partner.

In his new role, Zaleski is responsible for overseeing professionals, managing financial operations and fostering client and prospect relationships for tax services in BDO’s greater Detroit office. He has more than 25 years of experience in public accounting, advising both public and private multinational companies, and serving clients in the manufacturing, distribution, health care and private equity industries.

John Marquardt

In Marquardt’s new role, he will be responsible for establishing objectives and managing all aspects of the central region practice offices, including strategic planning, budgeting, client services, recruiting and staff development. Marquardt previously served as MP for the firm’s Detroit practice and has more than 25 years of experience in manufacturing and distribution, technology and private equity companies.

In his new role, Black will continue to conduct audits and internal control evaluations for public and private companies. He has more than 18 years of experience working with organizations in the real estate, manufacturing, health care and service industry sectors.

BDO USA Names MP for SEC Services

Chicago-based BDO USA (FY18 net revenue of $1.46 billion) announced that Tim Kviz has joined the firm as national assurance MP for SEC services, succeeding Jeff Lenz, who will retire from BDO in 2019.

“Tim is an exceptional leader and SEC practice professional who will add significant strength and depth to our technical capabilities. His previous experience working at and with the SEC will prove invaluable in his new role with BDO,” says Christopher Tower, national MP for audit quality and professional practice,

Kviz joins BDO from Freddie Mac, where he served as vice president, head of accounting policy and external reporting for the past 11 years. In that role he had extensive experience working with the SEC as he led the accounting policy, accounting implementation, new business initiative evaluation and implementation, and external reporting teams. Prior to his tenure at Freddie Mac, Kviz was a professional accounting fellow at the SEC for two years. He also worked at PwC for 12 years.

BDO USA Acquires SWC Technology Partners

Chicago-based BDO USA LLP (FY18 net revenue of $1.5 billion) has completed an expansion of its advisory services practice through the acquisition of Oak Brook, Ill.-based SWC Technology Partners LLC, a provider of IT solutions to middle market businesses throughout the Midwest. SWC has provided clients with technology solutions that optimize productivity, strengthen customer relationships, enhance data sharing and drive profitability for more than 30 years. The transaction brings nine principals and 215 total staff to BDO’s advisory practice.

BDO USA Acquires Smith & Gesteland

Chicago-based BDO USA LLP (FY17 net revenue of $1.4 billion) announced an expansion of its Wisconsin practice through the addition of 85 staff, including 15 partners, from Smith & Gesteland LLP (FY16 net revenue of $15.4 million) of Middleton, Wis., effective July 1.

Smith & Gesteland provides accounting, tax, human resource management and information technology services to a client base of middle market businesses. The firm has an “80/20” consulting practice that helps clients focus on critical success factors to enhance profitability. S&G has significant strength in the construction, technology, manufacturing, nonprofit and real estate industries.

BDO USA Names Hirs as a Natural Resources Fellow

Chicago-based BDO USA (FY17 net revenue of $1.4 billion) named Edward Hirs as a natural resources fellow. In this new role, Hirs will serve as a strategic advisor to BDO’s natural resources practice and work in close collaboration with the national and global practice leaders.

Hirs is a current managing director of Hillhouse Resources, an independent exploration and production company with a portfolio of onshore conventional oil and gas discoveries and prospects.

Prior positions in the energy industry include serving as partner and CFO of DJ Resources, an independent oil and gas company. Hirs began his career at Mobil Oil and later worked at the U.S. Department of Energy at the office of conservation and solar energy. He also ran Hirs & Company, a corporate finance advisory firm, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions.

“Ed is a well-known voice in the Houston oil and gas market and a prominent energy economist,” says Clark Sackschewsky, national leader of BDO’s natural resources practice and tax managing principal for BDO’s Houston office.
