M&L CPAs to Merge With Adams Brown Beran & Ball

Great Bend, Kan.-based Adams Brown Beran & Ball (FY18 net revenue of $24.2 million) announced that Wichita, Kan.-based M&L CPAs, will become part of ABBB, expanding the firm’s Kansas presence to 15 offices.

The combined firm will now have 32 professional staff and a total staff of 46 in Wichita. Total employees in the firm will grow to 205. M&L CPAs also has an office in El Dorado, Kan.

“We have identified key growth areas for the firm, and Wichita is one of those areas,” says MP Brian Staats. “This increased presence will allow us to help more businesses within our industry specialties with customized solutions.”

With all the changes happening within the CPA industry, M&L recognized the need to put itself in a position to better help its clients with deeper solutions.

“There is a lot of synergy between our firms,” says Sam Seward, founding shareholder of M&L. “Together, we are a much stronger firm in terms of what we can offer to businesses, as well as to our team members.”

All current M&L shareholders ­– Seward, Curtis Dean and Arlen Hamilton – will be joining the firm’s leadership team.

“Over the years, other firms have reached out to us about a possible merger,” Seward says. “We always said ‘no,’ but we really like ABBB’s dedication to the Wichita market and its commitment to serving smaller communities like El Dorado. We are confident this is a good fit, allowing us to continue serving our clients while providing new opportunities to our team.”

Great Bend, Kan.-based Adams Brown Beran & Ball (FY17 net revenue of $20.9 million) announced that Brett Henry, Meagan Wellbrock and Julie Wondra have been admitted to the partnership group.

Henry joined the ABBB team in 2006 and previously served as a principal. As a partner, Henry will continue consulting with a variety of clients. He is a member of the firm’s construction industry and CFO service line teams. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is a member of the AICPA and Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants (KSCPA), where he graduated from KSCPA’s “20 up to 40” leadership program.

Wellbrock began her career at ABBB as an intern and joined the firm full-time in 2007. As the audit and attestation (A&A) service line leader, she focuses on providing A&A services, managing a variety of audit engagements, and consulting on managerial and operational concerns. She holds a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. She serves on the KSCPA Audit and Assurance Tax Force. Wellbrock was named the AICPA/KSCPA Women to Watch Emerging Leader in 2015 and has graduated from both the AICPA Leadership Academy and the KSCPA’s “20 up to 40” leadership program.

Wondra will continue serving a variety of clients, leading the firm’s manufacturing industry team, and serving as the firm’s Affordable Care Act specialist. After two years at a Big 4 accounting firm in Kansas City, she joined the ABBB team as a staff accountant in 2008. Wondra is the 2013 recipient of the AICPA/KSCPA Women to Watch Emerging Leader award. In addition, she is a graduate of the KSCPA’s “20 up to 40” leadership program and Leadership McPherson.

Dennis joined ABBB in 2004 and works in the tax department, providing tax and accounting services to clients in a variety of industries. Dennis also chairs the firm’s tax advisory board and co-leads the firm’s tax service line.

Additionally, he serves as the firm’s energy (oil and gas) segment leader. He has been with the firm since 2006 and previously served as a senior manager.

Ryan, previously a senior manager, joined the firm in 2008. Outside of her client responsibilities, she has managed the Colby, Kan., office operations since 2013. Within the firm, Ryan also directs the new CFO service line and serves on the marketing advisory board. She is a participant in the partner in training program and is a LEAD Academy Alumni and current sponsor for the program.

Moss Adams Expands Footprint With Grant Thornton Office Acquisition

Seattle-based Moss Adams (FY09 net revenue of $322 million) announced their plan to acquire the Albuquerque, N.M. practice of Grant Thornton (FY09 net revenue of $1.1 billion) in July.

Kim Nunley, Grant Thornton’s Albuquerque OMP, will join Moss Adams as a partner along with many of the client service staff and employees. Wayne Brown, Moss Adams Albuquerque OMP, will continue to provide local leadership. He says, “I have known and respected Kim for many years and look forward to working closely with her. She is highly regarded within the profession and the Albuquerque community.” 

In evaluating its strategic direction, GT senior leadership determined it will exit the New Mexico market. 

This acquisition demonstrates Moss Adams commitment to the Southwest and overall firm growth. According to Chris Schmidt, Moss Adams president, “Moss Adams is focused on growth and the GT practice blends well with our Albuquerque industry group specialization in areas such as financial institutions, credit unions, employee benefit plans, technology/life sciences, and manufacturing companies.”

IPA 200 Firm Expands Reach in Arkansas with Acquisition

Looking to expand its geographic reach and deepen its construction industry specialty, Great Bend, Kan.-based Adams Brown Beran & Ball, Chtd., an IPA 200 firm, has acquired the Jonesboro, Ark., branch of EGP, PLLC.

The branch will be led by partner Mark Burnett, who will also serve as construction team leader. All six individuals in the former EGP Jonesboro office, including branch co-leader Ron George, have joined Adams Brown.

“Our deep industry experience will be expanded with this addition to the firm,” says Adams Brown MP Brian Staats. “We are excited to have Mark help drive our strategic direction in the construction space at the same time we expand our geographic footprint into Arkansas.”

ABBB Acquires Wichita CPA Firm

Great Bend, Kan.-based Adams Brown Beran & Ball (ABBB) (FY15 net revenue of $16.5 million) and Wichita, Kan.-based Hiebert & Decker CPAs have announced their plans for a merger.

Effective Nov. 1, Hiebert & Decker will be recognized as Adams Brown Beran & Ball.

“We view this merger as a significant benefit for all of our clients and employees,” says Ben Wilson, PIC of ABBB’s Wichita office. “Combining our resources and knowledge base is a tremendous win for our clients.”

Hiebert & Decker was founded in 1973. The firm provides a wide range of services for individuals, businesses, nonprofit organizations, trusts and estates.

David O’Dell will join ABBB at their McPherson office.
