Richmond, Va.-based Cherry Bekaert (FY17 net revenue of $173.8 million) welcomed Anne Oliver as a director of specialty tax services in its Washington D.C., practice. Oliver joins Cherry Bekaert after being part of the tax controversy group with the national office of a Big 4 accounting firm.

In her new role, Oliver will work with clients on all IRS-related issues. Such matters include responding to notices, handling penalties, addressing procedural issues, representing clients in exams before Appeals, and requesting pre-filing agreements and private letter rulings. She will also leverage her knowledge of tax controversy to help clients resolve issues related to statutes of limitations, refund claims, partnership audit matters, penalties and administrative law questions.

“For more than a decade, clients have benefited from Anne’s guidance regarding a wide range of technical and procedural issues associated with tax controversy and providing representation in front of the IRS at the exam and Appeals levels,” says Kurt Taves, MP of tax services. “Her arrival at Cherry Bekaert enhances our ability to immediately address and resolve any tax controversies that our clients face, as well as strengthens the tax advisory services provided by the firm.”

Oliver’s career began as a trial attorney at the Department of Justice tax division. In this capacity, she litigated tax cases in both district and bankruptcy courts and tried cases concerning tax shelters, fraud, tax equity and fiscal responsibility act partnership issues, and employment and excise taxes. Oliver also represented the United States in several large, corporate Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases in Delaware.

Separate from client engagements, Oliver has performed external presentations on several controversy topics, prepared and taught internal trainings, and wrote articles on developments in case law and IRS practice and procedure. In addition to her tax controversy background, Oliver specializes in corporate and international tax, pass-through issues, employment and excise taxes, information reporting, and different kinds of credits.
