Chicago-based Grant Thornton LLP (FY13 net revenue of $1.3 billion) named CEO Stephen Chipman senior vice chair effective Jan. 1. The appointment follows the firm’s announcement in June of J. Michael McGuire assuming the role as CEO in 2015.

In this role, Chipman will lead the firm’s international and public policy operations. He will also remain active with major client relationships and in numerous professional, business and civic organizations.

“Stephen has been an integral contributor to the growth and success of Grant Thornton during his more than 30 years with the organization,” says McGuire. “He is an essential steward of our firm’s global strategy and brings to this role deep insights and tremendous leadership, which will enable us to better serve our clients and position Grant Thornton for long-term success.”

Chipman was named CEO in January 2010 and significant enhancements were made during his five-year tenure – returning the firm to a trajectory of growth and increasing the firm’s revenue by 22 percent during the last three fiscal years. The firm embraced initiatives to better serve its clients through the establishment of a shared services center in India and the launch of the China, India and Japan business groups.
